In 2020 the Inman Valley Community was preparing to put on a large static display as part History SA, History Month in May. This year’s plans included an interactive community function that encouraged storytelling and recording of personal histories. Due to restrictions at our venues these events were cancelled. So, we have decided to bring a little of the history to you, with the added joy of spreading the stories further then has ever been capable through our physical displays. Join us as we start to create an online presence for history in Inman Valley. Learn more about his amazing gem of a valley and share your own stories and experiences to be included in the digital archive created by the community, for everyone.
The starting point for our experience through history is this map of Inman Valley from 1860 which shows the Inman River running through the valley to the coast at Encounter Bay, Victor Harbour SA. This original survey map of the area shows some of the division of land that was proposed, although this map is more of the Lower Inman Area. This can be seen online available through the National Library of Australia https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-231425338/view . Some of the blocks in this version have been numbered for sale. From local knowledge this was done for the uses of agriculture, with the best land being divided up first, then being followed by the ‘Badlands’ or low-lying land being divided up years later. The first sections of about 80 acres each were made available for sale in early 1850, but records show that several settler families were in the area during the 1840’s.
Originally known as “PugTown” for the many homes in the area built with “wattle and daub” consisting of 2 - 4 rooms. The valley has been home to orchards and farming over the years and continues to thrive as a strong community within the Fleurieu Coast.
Traditionally visitors are able to follow our History Trail through the Inman Valley Township with a printed flyer available during History Month. As this was also not able this year, we have created an online version on our website at https://ivmemorialhall.wixsite.com/mysite/history-trail-map .
